The Manchester United striker debate: Marcus Rashford? Someone else? Or a mobile attack?

21/11/2019

Marcus Rashford impressed at Manchester Uniteds 1-1 draw scoring the opening goal until the late equaliser of Adam Lallana, but is he the perfect man?
His performance prompted a discussion on Super as Graeme Souness Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho assessed the suitability of Rashford and gave their views on the type of striker that Manchester United side needs.
Regardless of Rashford display at Old Trafford, Souness had been in no doubt that Manchester United still need to make a proven goalscorer to replace Romelu Lukaku, that was sold through the summer to Inter Milan.
He is just one day, however, he is not the final article right now, he explained of Rashford. He has not seen enough goals in the Premier League for Manchester United to hang their hat to him being the man that is definitely going to take them back to wherever they need. He needs assistance.
He has to be a participant, but this season hes been asked to be the main man. Its the toughest place to play on the football pitch. He isnt ready to fill that job. He needs help. Just like the young boy [Daniel] James will need assist.
Its too much . It is too much for any 21-year-old you might name. You cant have a 21-year-old because the person at a club of this size.
Strikers are the hardest things to find. That is the reason why they cost the most money. If you can land and he is not precisely what you want, you just take him anyhow and construct the rest . Youre fighting for goals, that.
Where Man United are now, they will take anything!
Mourinho knows Rashford greater than most having worked closely with him during his time in charge of Manchester United. He insisted the 21-year-olds encounter is not an issue, rather saying that he is simply a lot more effective from the wide positions.
I really dont think hes a 9 that may play from a minimal block or that can be a target person, he explained. I think he is a man of movement, who can strike space then strike defenders with the ball in his feet.
I dont think hes a pure 9, so it is dependent upon the model of drama. If Ole needs to play the way he played now I believe Rashford is the striker for him.
Hes young, but hes experienced. At 21 years old, he has more matches in the Premier League, at 24, 25, at the Euros in the Europa League at the World Cup.
Therefore, for me, the purpose is not his age, it is his qualities. He is an excellent player in some positions, in some versions of play. But as a target person I dont think he has the 30 goals that a top striker has.
For me, he can get better and better and better enjoying the way he did now, playing from the left side, playing a target man.
However, for him to function as target man in matches where Manchester United are all more still dominant, playing against defensive teams, against low blocks, I think its difficult for him
Neville, nonetheless, insisted Rashford could develop into a successful No 9, including the priority for Manchester United should not simply be to bring in any striker who can score goals – but one who is the correct fit for the way Solskjaer wants to play.
He is still young, Neville said of Rashford. I look at [Roberto] Firmino if he came to England, I seem [Mohamed] Salah if he was at Chelsea, I consider [Sadio] Mane. Sometimes players have to develop to what they will become.
I think United desire a striker like Firmino, like [Heung-Min] Son at Tottenham. I think [Solskjaer] needs that kind of participant.
I dont believe he needs a typical striker who is going to be a Lukaku or a [Diego] Costa. I really dont think he is looking for this sort. I believe hes searching for a type in a three or a front two.
I feel this club has consistently had strikers who will play pairs, that contribute off the ball.
Ill make a point concerning Ruud van Nistelrooy. We won less championships at Wayne Rooney with him.
He was nowhere near as good a finisher as Ruud or as great a striker as Ruud, however, the group became better. And thats my point, I dont think Ole wants a striker like this; I think he wants a portable striker.
Neville used the example of Christian Benteke and Jurgen Klopp . He just chucked him from the club since he did not match his style of play, he explained. Oles done exactly the same with Lukaku, and Lukaku is a far superior player than Benteke.
Ole is not likely to sign a striker just because he scores goals, since Lukaku would have done .
For Keane, the remedy was simple. Just go and receive [Harry] Kane out of Tottenham, he said. Easy. They are in disarray. Just go and catch him.
As for Rashford, Keane theorised that the 21-year-old does not would like to be Manchester Uniteds most important man, adding he is much better suited to a supporting role.
A lot of players dont wish to be the main striker, they do not wish to be the most important man. I believe he wishes to play in broader positions. His power is his pace and he will impact the game more coming out of obviously and wide around the counter-attack.
It is still a huge problem, that he doesnt score enough targets. I dont think hes that enormous presence if you would like to be the striker at Man United. I dont think hes great with his back to target.
But he is a talented kid. He is still learning his trade. But the pressure on him in the last few months, I really dont think hes coped with it well because he doesnt need to be the most important striker.
