Roger Federer suffered a shock 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 defeat in the hands of Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner had looked destined to get a box-office final against Rafael Nadal in what would have become the rivals’ first meeting in Flushing Meadows.
But that script with victory awakened over the Swiss, who had a and appeared out of sorts through a five-set conquer, hitting at 60 unforced mistakes.
Dimitrov had taken only two sets him off, and had not beaten Federer in some of their previous seven games.
