Anthony Joshua’s coach Rob McCracken insists the health of his fighters is of”paramount importance”.
McCracken told that the BBC Boxing podcast he”understood Joshua had been concussed” in the next round from Andy Ruiz Jr at June, but allow him fight on until his seventh-round reduction.
Brain injury charity Headway called it a”shocking entrance”.
“I am not a physician and it may be the concussed is not the ideal expression to have used,” McCracken said on Thursday.
“The health of all of the boxers I work with is of paramount importance to me and I’ve used my decision making and expertise to do what is suitable for them.
“There is not any formal concussion protocol in which the physician steps in to evaluate the boxer so you have to use your experience as a mentor and your knowledge of somebody to make a determination on whether you think they can recuperate.
“I have had this a number of times in my career in professional boxing at which boxers have recovered from a difficult round to go on and win the fight. I also have pulled out fighters out of fights because I understood it wasn’t in their own interests to last.”
Ahead of the seventh round, where he had been stopped by his Mexican-American competition, Joshua looked perplexed in his corner said to McCracken:”Why am I feeling like this?”
GB Boxing has supported McCracken, 51, who is its functionality director.
“Anyone who has ever seen him perform knows he has the best interests of the boxers in mind,” a spokesperson said.
“Ensuring we provide a responsibility of care and protect the physical and mental health of the fighters is fundamental to how Rob McCracken has led the world programme to get boxing throughout the last ten years.”
Before McCracken’s statement on Thursday, Luke Griggs, deputy chief executive of Headway, had said:”Trainers have a duty of care to their boxers and it seems clear that Anthony Joshua’s coach’s sole priority has been winning that struggle, not shielding the fighter out of a potentially fatal accident.”
